Artist's Notes

Is there anything that is timeless? I think one of them is desire(欲望). It is like a double-edged sword: on one hand, it is the energy that is necessary in our lives and on the other hand, desire can make our lives desolate. In particular, sexual desire has always had a double-sided aspect, especially in ancient eastern countries where Confucianism(儒敎) placed a great emphasis on proprieties. What was sex to them? What other desires did they have?

There is one artist that provides us with an answer. Shin Yun-Bok was a gifted artist in the 18th century Joseon Dynasty. He was the only court painter that challenged the strict rules and concept of the North School(北宗畵風) that was dominant in the royal painting institute. After quitting the royal institute, he started to create his own unique style. I am mostly interested in the subject of his paintings, which satirizes the hidden lifestyles of the noblemen at that time through his excellent imagination. He usually portrays sexual curiosity, forbidden relationships, and immoral bureaucrats in a straightforward way.

The main theme of my work is human life itself and then it is restructured through my own imagination. There is no fabrication or hidden agenda. What is shown is my own story and my desire. In that sense, his work is similar to mine. This exhibition introduces my avatar, which attempts to transpose and communicate with Shin Yun-Bok’s paintings. It is not me that is casting the question, but my inner self is having a conversation with his paintings.

However…… this is funny to me..
Why…….. Because this is my own imagination...
I am still talking with Shin Yun-Bok...
There is still a lot to talk about….
I do not know when it will end, but...
I will keep having conversations with him for my own desire.
I do not see the end yet..
